Community Faculty

Who are Community Faculty?

Community Faculty members are critical to the mission and vision of the FCoM. Community Faculty teach, support, nurture, and provide important feedback to students to ensure progress in their medical education. Community faculty professional relationships with learners and enhance medical practice opportunities.

Community Faculty Opportunities

Community Faculty needs for the medical education program include:

• Clinical Experiences in the Foundation Phase (Years 1 and 2)
  • Physicians are needed in every specialty for community precepting. Students will rotate at a clinical site one half-day per week starting in the first year.
• Clerkships
  • Physicians are needed in every specialty for clerkship precepting.

Appointment process

Community Faculty are appointed by the Dean after the recommendation of the Department Chair, the Associate Dean for Faculty and Academic Affairs, and the Appointment and Promotions Committee. Depending on the faculty member's qualifications, employment, and responsibilities, a community faculty member would be appointed to one of three categories:

• Clinical Affiliate Faculty – a faculty member employed by an FCoM clinical affiliate partner
• Associated Faculty – a faculty member employed by a clinical site not affiliated with the FCoM
• Volunteer Faculty – non-practicing physicians, retired or otherwise, who are engaging in on-campus teaching, small group facilitating, student mentoring, and/or committee service.

If you want to become a community faculty member, the process will start with completing an application. Other documents you will need to complete your application include:

• Updated Curriculum Vita
• Proof of active board certification, or if not board certified, official transcripts of your terminal degree from the degree-granting institution.

Community Faculty Privileges

Community faculty, depending on the community faculty type, are eligible for annual appointments with the following ranks:

• Clinical Instructor
• Clinical Assistant Professor
• Clinical Associate Professor
• Clinical Professor

Appointed community faculty receive:

• Recognition of faculty appointment and participation in the medical school.
• Recognition at medical school and community events.
• Permission to include their faculty appointments and rank in their professional and clinical promotional materials.
• Privileges to the medical school library include access to electronic resources.
• A Belmont faculty email address – @belmont.edu.
• Access to continuing medical education (CME) resources for and teaching medical students and board certification renewal.
• Access to facilities and professional development activities, seminars, and workshops.
