Belmont University takes pride in its exceptional alumni — one shining example being Whitney Joy Sanford, 2018 Master of Science in Occupational Therapy (MSOT) graduate. A practicing occupational therapist, Sanford is co-owner of Aspire Therapies LLC, a Pediatric Occupational Therapy Practice. Her journey to becoming an occupational therapy professional was marked by self-discovery and a commitment to making a positive impact.
Sanford's interest in the medical field ignited from a pivotal experience in high school, working with an individual in a special education program. She transitioned from her pursuit of a degree in broadcast media, and found her calling in occupational therapy, where she could combine her love for communication and science while focusing on individualized healing. She realized that occupational therapists often work in special needs settings, aligning with her newfound career aspirations.
Choosing Belmont for graduate education was a natural decision for Sanford, a proud Tennessee native. The small class sizes and supportive faculty stood out, providing an environment that nurtured her success. She attributes her growth as a clinician and eventual business owner to Assistant Professor in the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, Dr. Camille Turner. “She really saw something in me and encouraged me to challenge myself to grow as a clinician and eventual business owner,” Sanford reflected.
Belmont's impact on Sanford's clinical practice is evident, particularly through Aspire Therapies’ emphasis on contemporary issues, addressing health and economic disparities that resonate with her work in marginalized communities. She credits Belmont’s MSOT program for preparing her with essential networking skills and honing her clinical reasoning and assessment abilities.
Reflecting on her time at Belmont, Sanford emphasizes the importance of self-confidence and resilience in pursuing a career in occupational therapy. She encourages future students to never underestimate themselves. “I love being an occupational therapist with every fiber of my being. I don’t think many people experience the job satisfaction that I do. The experience is rigorous but once you complete it, it is so rewarding.”
