College to host one event each month throughout the academic year
Belmont’s College of Sciences & Mathematics (CSM) is marking a momentous milestone with “The Power of 10,” a 10-month celebration commemorating the college’s 10-year anniversary. The celebration’s title pays tribute to the mathematics concept of 10 raised to its various integer exponents, reflecting the college’s commitment to scientific and mathematical excellence.
From Aug. 2024 through May 2025, CSM will host one event each month designed for students, faculty, staff and alumni to engage with one another and foster a sense of community withing the CSM family.
The Power of 10 kicks off with a group photo of CSM students, faculty and staff spelling out “CSM” on the South Lawn. The celebration concludes in May with a closing ceremony and graduation.
Additional events throughout the year include a trivia night with parents during family weekend, the annual Science Undergraduate Research Symposium, a day dedicated to community service and the Scholarship, Performance, Art, Research & Knowledge Symposium.
The idea for the college was first proposed in 2014 when former provost Dr. Thomas Burns suggested the formation of a dedicated College of Sciences & Mathematics. This vision united the departments of biology, chemistry and physics, math and computer science and psychological science under one academic roof.
Following a nationwide search, Dr. Thom Spence was appointed as the inaugural dean, priming the college for a decade of growth and innovation.
Today, 14 majors are housed within the College of Sciences & Mathematics and over 90% of students are involved in undergraduate research with faculty members. In addition, over 26 state-of-the-art teaching and research labs exist to facilitate and make research easily accessible to students.
“These past nine years have been absolutely phenomenal, and it is now time to recognize the legacy of the programs and celebrate our accomplishments,” said Dr. Linda Jones, associate dean of the college.
More details regarding each event will be made public in the coming weeks. To stay up to date with all CSM news, follow CSM on Instagram, LinkedIn and subscribe to the college’s quarterly newsletters.
