Council aims to support alumni development, preserve traditions, strengthen connections among graduates
Belmont University’s College of Law (COL) recently launched its first official alumni council. The Belmont College of Law Alumni Council is an alumni-run organization connecting the college to its alumni by supporting alumni development, creating a sense of community and preserving traditions.
While working to organize the first reunion weekend for the College of Law’s inaugural Class of 2014, Alumni Council President Molly Shehan, alongside alumna Shellie Handelsman (‘14), identified the need for a council to follow and connect Belmont Law’s expanding group of accomplished graduates.
“The motivation behind creating an Alumni Council was to intentionally bring together an active and engaged group of Belmont College of Law graduates who are leaders within the Nashville community and can serve as ambassadors to help keep Bemont College of Law alumni connected,” Shehan said. “We want to foster a sense of community among all Belmont Law alumni and make sure that they are being served beyond graduation.”
The Alumni Council’s mission is to foster a vibrant and engaged alumni community that actively contributes to the growth and success of the College of Law. To achieve this mission, the Council outlines three fundamental objectives:
- Supporting Alumni Development: The Council will aim to facilitate the personal and professional development of Belmont COL alumni through mentorship programs, volunteering, Continuing Legal Education, speaking opportunities and post-graduation activities.
- Fostering a Sense of Community: To create a strong sense of belonging and community, the Council will work to build and maintain relationships among alumni, encouraging them to stay connected and involved with each other throughout their lives.
- Sustaining Traditions and Memories: The Council will help create, preserve and promote the traditions, history and memories of the school and graduates.
The Alumni Council consists of a diverse group of dedicated alumni who have a passion for building community. Two representatives from each graduating class are selected as ambassadors, actively participating in alumni engagement initiatives and advocating for alumni interests.

The Alumni Council is focused on building a strong foundation and lasting connections during its first year. Scheduled for Sept. 6-7, a reunion weekend celebration will commemorate a decade of impact in various fields of law made by Belmont Law’s inaugural class of 2014. The Council will also organize its first networking event for alumni.
In addition to championing alumni engagement, the Council is committed to championing the success of current law students. Shehan and President-elect Chris Beverly (‘15) recently welcomed first-year law students in a letter from the Alumni Council.
“The Alumni Council is here to support you throughout your law school experience and beyond,” Beverly said. “We are invested in your success and are available as a resource to offer guidance, mentorship and networking opportunities.”
