10 Ways Student-Athletes Embrace a Tradition of Academic Excellence

December 19, 2023 | by Cara Davis

Belmont Athletics has consistently made headlines for its impressive academic achievements, most recently securing the sixth spot in the nation for graduation rates among student-athletes in the 2022-23 Graduation Success Rate (GSR) Report by the NCAA.

In the 2022-23 academic year, Belmont was also honored with the Missouri Valley Conference's All-Academic Award, where student-athletes achieved an impressive 3.522 grade-point average. The University has now claimed a conference academic achievement award 20 of the last 22 academic years dating back to time in the Ohio Valley Conference and Atlantic Sun Conference, emphasizing a tradition of academic excellence.

Belmont's athletic teams also consistently rank among the nation's elite in the annual NCAA Division I Academic Progress Rate report, showcasing their dedication to academic success alongside athletic prowess.

Beyond the numbers, Belmont President Greg Jones emphasized the role of team sports in fostering virtues and character. "Team sports teach us about fostering virtues and character," said Belmont President Greg Jones. "Athletic coaches often serve as some of the most important teachers in the University because they witness their students in comprehensive environments, like bus rides after a loss."

At Belmont, academics, sports and values intertwine to create a tradition of excellence that extends beyond the athletes who compete. Scott Corley, Vice President and Director of Athletics at Belmont, underscores the vital relationship between sports and academics, highlighting the University’s unwavering commitment to providing a holistic educational experience that enriches the lives of student-athletes and the broader campus community.

Here are 10 characteristics of the athletic program that foster a tradition of academic excellence:

The Relationship Between Sports, Academics and Campus Life

1. Recruiting Ambitious Student-Athletes: Corley explains that Belmont's journey to academic and athletic excellence begins with recruiting individuals who excel both on the field and in the classroom. "It's vital to ensure that they possess the right mindset and motivation to excel in both realms, enhancing their overall college experience."

2. Striking a Harmonious Balance: It's a myth that sports hinder academic performance. "Our staff provides invaluable guidance on time management and our coaches excel in coordinating practice schedules that align with academic requirements,” Corley said. “Interestingly, we often find that our busiest student-athletes tend to perform exceptionally well."

3. Support and Accountability: The University provides academic counselors, mandates study hall hours and implements intervention plans to help students overcome challenges. "Belmont University is committed to ensuring that student-athletes receive the assistance they need," said Corley.

4. Leadership Beyond the Arena: Corley highlights the example of Ellie Ivancich, a former volleyball player, who served as the president of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAC). "Ellie organized impactful events like Mental Health Week and fundraisers for Special Olympics. These experiences prepared Ellie for a thriving career and role [as President of the board for the Nashville] Junior Chamber of Commerce."

5. Resilience and Perseverance: Corley shares the inspiring journey of Izzy Schauer, a volleyball player who overcame severe injuries and surgeries to triumphantly return to the team recently, gaining invaluable life lessons through her sports journey.

6. Inclusivity and Community Engagement: "Sports provide a unifying platform for students of diverse backgrounds to rally behind their University, fostering a sense of unity and pride," said Corley. In fact, in fall 2023, Belmont had 26 international student-athletes from 17 different countries.

Jones also acknowledged the unifying power of sports and its role in connecting people campus-wide and beyond. "When people gather together to share an experience and watch excellence, it connects us. Sports do that beautifully."

7. Unique Initiatives: Corley said student-athletes collectively contributed over 3,200 hours of community service. These initiatives underscore Belmont's commitment to giving back to the community, including special athletic workshops for the students of Covenant School in Nashville.

Holistic Development: "We prioritize the growth of student-athletes not just as competitors but as well-rounded individuals," said Corley. This approach encompasses nurturing their physical, mental and emotional well-being to ensure success both on and off the field.

Academic Excellence Rewards: "We celebrate academic achievements just as much as athletic victories," said Corley. "Academic accolades are a source of pride for our University, demonstrating our commitment to both athletics and education."

Lifelong Bonds: Belmont's emphasis on teamwork and its tight-knit community foster lifelong friendships among student-athletes. These connections extend far beyond their college years, providing valuable networks for their future careers. Additionally, several teams, including men's soccer and baseball, regularly host alumni events to maintain these relationships and create opportunities for engagement.

At Belmont, the tradition of academic excellence and athletic achievement continues, shaping well-rounded individuals prepared to tackle the challenges of tomorrow.
