Nancy Riley

Biography

Dr. Nancy P. Riley is a Lecturer in Music, teaching undergraduate courses in Ethnomusicology and Music History. She received her PhD in Music (Musicology/Ethnomusicology) and a Graduate Certificate in Women's Studies from the University of Georgia. Prior to teaching at Belmont, she taught courses at the University of Georgia, Georgia Gwinnett College, and Athens Technical College. 

Dr. Riley's dissertation, "Underground Not Underexposed: Bloodshot Records, Alt.country, and the Chicago Live Music Scene," considers genre formation, local music scenes, and the role of independent record labels within those scenes, using Bloodshot Records and Chicago's punk and indie music scene as case studies. She has presented her research at national and regional conferences, and is a member of the American Musicological Society, the Society for Ethnomusicology, and the International Association for the Study of Popular Music. She is also interested in the scholarship of teaching and learning and has published in the International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning. 

Dr. Riley holds a Masters degree in Piano Performance and Pedagogy from the University of Georgia and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Piano Performance from Transylvania University (Lexington, KY). She maintained a private piano studio in Athens, Georgia for nearly two decades, and has been active as a piano adjudicator for many years. She is a member of Music Teachers National Association.
