Dr. Margaret “Meg” Elizabeth Tully

Dr. Margaret "Meg" Tully passed away on October 3 at the age of 35 after a battle with leukemia. Meg was an Assistant Professor of Communication Studies and beloved by Belmont students, faculty, staff, and many others. Meg’s students commented on her kindness, engaging classroom presence and humor, while her faculty colleagues noted that she was bright, extremely capable, fiercely intelligent, funny and optimistic. She was also the daughter of longtime English faculty member Sue Trout. Meg will be greatly missed by everyone in the Belmont community.

Meg was a 2011 graduate of Belmont with a BA in Communication Studies and a minor in Public Relations. She went on to earn an MA from Ball State University and a PhD from the University of Iowa. Her PhD was in Communication Studies, and she also received a certificate in Women’s and Sexuality Studies from Iowa. Her dissertation was titled “Trainwreck Feminism: Women, Comedy and Postfeministic Culture.” She received two top paper awards at the National Communication Association’s annual conference and published several articles in Women’s Studies in Communication and Critical Studies in Media Communication.

After teaching at Penn State University, Meg joined the Belmont faculty in 2022. She taught First Year Seminar, Rhetoric of Social Movements, Gender and Communication, and an Interdisciplinary Learning Community on Women, Comedy and Social Change. Meg was passionately committed to social justice. More than all her credentials and professional experiences, however, she was a delightful person. We will miss her greatly.
