Biography
Dr. Jennifer Crowell Thompson has been a dedicated member of the School of Social Work at Belmont University since 2008. In her tenure at Belmont she has taught a diverse array of courses, with an emphasis on Social Work Policy and Policy Practice, Research Methods, and Belmont's liberal arts general education core. She currently serves as Chair for the Belmont School of Social Work as well as the Assistant Dean for Undergraduate Education in the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. Dr. Crowell Thompson earned her Ph.D. in Social Work from the College of Social Work at Virginia Commonwealth University in 2007. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Rhodes College, Memphis, Tennessee (1999), and a Master of Science in Social Work from the University of Tennessee (2003).
Her professional journey spans a range of experiences, from her role as a teacher-counselor in a Vanderbilt-affiliated treatment program to her work with the Tennessee State Comptroller’s Office and her later focus on women’s health education. These roles have provided her with a robust background in both policy and direct practice, informing her approach to teaching and her research. Dr. Crowell Thompson’s current research centers on the development of professional identity in undergraduate students.
Dr. Crowell Thompson, named the 2023 Chaney Distinguished Professor and a recipient of Belmont's prestigious Presidential Faculty Achievement Award (2020), is a dedicated teacher and advisor. She is deeply committed to the development and growth of undergraduate students who are equipped to recognize and solve complex community-based problems using an abiding understanding of justice, and a strong transdisciplinary knowledge base.
