Biography

Carla J. McDonough (Ph.D., University of Tennessee, Knoxville) is an Assistant Professor of English. Her scholarly interests include Modern and Contemporary Drama, Twentieth Century Literature, Gender Studies, Film, and Comedy. She has published articles about various playwrights, including Sam Shepard, David Mamet, David Rabe, Adrienne Kennedy, Christina Reid, and Claudia Rankine, as well as articles about teaching drama and about feminism and motherhood. Her book, Staging Masculinity, analyzing issues of masculinity in American drama, has had several of its sections reprinted in other scholarly venues. More recently, she has been researching and writing about comedy on stage and in other kinds of performance, considering the value of the comedic form for opening up discussion about serious social issues. She teaches First and Third Year Writing, as well as various courses in modern drama and in comedy.
